Malaysia Study Finds Viagra More Effective for Chinese Men — Here’s Why

According to a medical research report from Malaysia, Viagra is more effective for Chinese Malaysians compared to other ethnic groups — and researchers believe lifestyle differences may be the reason.

According to the study presented at a urology medical conference, doctors prescribed Viagra to over 1,500 patients aged 22 to 99 over the course of one year. The findings revealed that Viagra’s effectiveness varied significantly by ethnicity.

The study found that Viagra was effective for up to 85% of Chinese Malaysian men. However, effectiveness was only 74% for men of Indian descent and even lower at 72% for Malay men.

Why the Difference?

Dr Peter Lim, Head of Urology at Gleneagles Hospital in Malaysia, theorised that Viagra’s varying effectiveness is likely linked to different lifestyle habits among ethnic groups.

He noted that Indian men tend to have higher rates of heart disease and hypertension, and are more prone to obesity — all of which contribute to poor blood circulation, including blood flow to the penis.

Malay men, he observed, tend to have a higher tolerance for discomfort and often delay seeking medical treatment until conditions become severe, missing the window for early intervention.

In contrast, Chinese Malaysians generally maintain healthier dietary habits and are more sensitive to bodily changes, seeking treatment early when something feels off. Dr Lim added that Chinese men tend to place greater importance on sexual performance and are more proactive about seeking help at the first sign of trouble.

According to statistics, nearly 60% of Malaysian men over 40 experience some degree of erectile dysfunction — a significant proportion of the male population.
